Established in 1976, the association is comprised of the directors of the 100 county departments of social services in North Carolina. Its mission is to inform, educate, and empower members in order to strengthen agencies, programs, and the delivery of social services to families and individuals.

The North Carolina Foster Parent Association's mission is to promote quality foster and adoptive services through collaborative advocacy, education, resources, and networking.
- Center for Aging Research and Educational Services (CARES)
Part of the Jordan Institute for Families at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work, the Center for Aging Research and Educational Services is dedicated to serving social work practitioners and decision makers who work with older and disabled adults and their families.
- Developmental Disabilities Training Institute (DDTI)
Part of the Jordan Institute for Families at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Their primary purpose and mission is to foster ongoing improvements in services and supports for people with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities (and co-occurring issues) by providing intensive, high quality, short-term training for administrative, professional and paraprofessional staff involved in their lives.
- Independent Living Resources, Inc.
ILR, Inc. provides a wide range of materials and services to educators and human services professionals. In North Carolina, they provide training and programs in the areas of adolescents in foster care and social worker safety.
- SAY SO (Strong Able Youth Speaking Out)
SAYSO, a group of teens working to improve the substitute care system, contributes to FP as part of its efforts to educate the community, speak out about needed changes, and provide support to youth who are or have been in substitute care.
